Established in 1864, Bayfront Park derives its name from the vessel that transported the island’s inaugural settlers.

Initially dubbed Nature’s Cove by a band of nature enthusiasts, the island became their sanctuary when their vessel, the ‘Bayfront,’ met its demise on the rocky shores of the west bay. Enthralled by the island’s untouched splendor, the group embraced their new home while awaiting a rescue that never materialized.

Left with idle hands, the men constructed dwellings and shed societal constraints, embracing a naturist lifestyle. This newfound freedom catalyzed the formation of a vibrant community of gay men, fostering a safe haven amidst the island’s pristine landscape. As time passed, newcomers arrived, drawn not only to the island’s natural beauty but also to the inclusive atmosphere, fostering a haven for all to revel in their natural desires.

Nature’s Cove offers a diverse range of attractions for visitors to enjoy. At the Welcome & Information Center, guests can gather information and relax in a casual atmosphere. The Swimming Pool, set amidst ruin stone surroundings, provides a unique and historic setting for a refreshing dip. Flamingo Bay Beach offers sandy shores and picturesque views, perfect for leisurely strolls or sunbathing. For relaxation, the Massage Hut provides rejuvenating treatments in a serene environment. Those seeking adventure can head to the Lookout Point & Campfire area to take in panoramic vistas and gather around a cozy fire. The park also features Monastery Ruins & Park, offering a glimpse into the area’s history and providing a tranquil retreat. On the other side of Alligator River, visitors can find rentals, but they are reminded not to feed the wildlife. Additionally, guests can dance the night away at the Dance Hut or savor fresh seafood at the Oyster Bar, known as a hangout spot for surfers. Numerous concealed areas harbor memorials to intimate settings scattered all around. Overall, Nature’s Cove offers something for everyone, blending history, relaxation, and entertainment seamlessly.
